Sea turtle season has officially begun in South Florida. Light restrictions are in effect in beach communities and soon, egg-laden females will be lumbering out of the surf in search of good nesting sites. Last year produced a record season for nesting counts; this year may see even more turtles in the surf and on the beach.
Are you prepared as a diver for encountering sea turtles in the surf or on the beach? Most informed divers know not to attempt riding or handling turtles underwater but what other behavior may hinder or cause stress for a pregnant female? If emerging from a night dive and discovering a nesting turtle, what must you avoid doing in order to protect the turtle? Are you aware of what your legal responsibilities and restrictions are in regard to sea turtle encounters?
We'll discuss these issues and more in this critical workshop. In addition to covering the legal and ethical issues relative to encounters, we'll also address the biology and scientific information available on the several species of turtle that visit our beaches. Participants will also learn of a special volunteer training opportunity that equips those qualified to join beach patrol teams. Team members monitor nesting sites, marking and protecting nests, and assist in hatchling recovery efforts.
Workshop participation I open to all but seating may be limited, so RSVP soon to ensure your chance to help the turtles.
