DAILY BEACH DIVER REPORT: 9-18-22

“Red in the morning, sailor take warning…” goes the saying, so we are cautious about the thunderstorms that will doubtless circle our area today. Still, there is good diving between with only 1’ of surf most of the time, generally good visibility, and warm 87F water down at 25’. Expect 10-12’ horizontal viz close in and a fuzzy 15-20’ on the first reef. Lobsters still running large compared to other years but must be hunted in water less than 30’ today.

DAILY BEACH DIVER REPORT: 9-17-22

Passing showers with lightning will cover our area today with only a few breaks in between. If you jump in between downpours, you will find some visibility issues and a bit more surge than usual. Watch for dramatic changes in surf that will occur as the storm front edges through, which means the calm water you entered might be 3-4’ waves at the end of your dive. Avoid being on the beach any time lightning is nearby.

DAILY BEACH DIVER REPORT: 9-16-22

So, storms are skittering around our coastline but their winds are nothing compared to what next week’s tropical storm will be packing. The present system will moderate by Saturday, allowing us 2-3 decent diving days before the middle of next week. No one can predict the strength or actual landfall of that new storm presently entering the Caribbean but even its influence may be enough to trash our surf. Take advantage of 1-2’ surf these next few days. Visibility is actually pretty good (but not excellent), current is mild and surge is moderate, temp is 88F, and the only real challenge now is that little bit of sargassum weed near the shoreline.

BTW, here is a hint as to when heavy weather is approaching: When lobsters and other mobile reef life leaves the shallows and heads toward the third reef, it is a sign that within a few days the bottom will fall out of the barometer. Watch that happen over the next few days and note that in your logbook.

DAILY BEACH DIVER REPORT: 9/15/22

Stormy skies gather and pass but the surf and beach seem little affected. Waves are really only 1-2’ most of the time, which is no problem for experienced beach divers. Visibility continues good to very good on the first reef with 15-20’ horizontal the least you can expect. Light current and moderate surge may be present throughout the day. Of course, water temps are still in the balmy 87-88F range. Lobsters are present but must be hunted. This is a great season so far. Weekend outlook continues optimistic.

Nicely dawned calm this morning with a bit of a breeze later. If you can get in early, you will have a great dive today with somewhat milky 25’ viz on the first reef, 86F at 25’ depth, and mild current/surge all day. Lobsters are fewer, mostly due to hunting pressure and commercial fishermen, but you can still limit with a little diligence. More wind later and through Thursday.

The sun is just peeking over the horizon into a nearly perfect day for a beach dive. Waves are only a foot or less at the moment and may grow just a few inches more. Currents and surge are mild, as is the temperature at 86F. Fish are EVERYWHERE and seem to be electrically charged with the change of season underwater. This is the time of year pelagic species migrate through our area, meaning we see more larger fish in closer to feed on reef species. Keep your camera close and ready!

Lobsters Are Large and Plentiful This Season

Contrary to some reports that the lobsters have been “picked over,” our team consistently finds them just off the beach, sometimes in 12’ of water just beyond the sandbar. Veteran hunters know that lobsters are available, even when lobstering pressure is intense - you just have to look for them.

Everyone who wanted a limit got theirs yesterday within a few minutes of descending and within 100 yards of the shore line.

Finally, Lake Atlantic has returned! Perfect calm prevails this morning, which should allow water to clear more and setting up a week of incredible diving conditions. 86F at depth with no surge but very strong current at times. Visibility continues to be a big problem up and down our coast with dirty green water being the norm these days. Add very strong longshore currents and you have the makings of a challenging, possibly unrewarding dive. Winds are expected to be mild next week and viz may improve but for this weekend expect poor viz between shore and the first reef. 8-10’ at best on the reef and significant current north and south of Port Everglades.

DAILY BEACH DIVER REPORT: 08*05*2022

A bit more wind and a lot more rain are headed our way today with more to follow on the weekend. Knee-high surf should not be a problem today but you will notice an increase in surge since yesterday. Temps still around 86 at 20’ and lobsters still gathering in all the usual nooks and crannies. Those hoping to go out for a midnight hunt should take care to watch the wind and surf for developments that might make entry and exit a challenge at night.

Snook Chokes on Cowfish: FWC to the Rescue

What do you do when a fish is choking on lunch? A state wildlife officer on patrol knew how to handle the odd sight.

While patrolling one day last month around the Jewfish Creek bridge, connecting the 18 Mile Stretch to Key Largo, Officer Mike Janzen came upon a snook that bit off more than it could chew. He noticed the fish was in distress as it swam upside down.

So Janzen, an officer with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, went to work. He scooped up the snook, brought it on his patrol boat and popped out the problem. What was it?

The snook had a cowfish wedged in its mouth, said an FWC spokesman, Officer Jason Rafter. The snook couldn’t swallow it or spit it out. Janzen’s quick thinking was a win for both fish. Said Rafter: “The officer revived both fish at the surface and watched both fish swim away.” The only bad news: The snook had to find another lunch.

DAILY BEACH DIVER REPORT: 08-04-2022

One more calmish day for diving before winds increase and surf rises tomorrow. Lots of seaweed to wade through but plenty of reasons to keep going: warm water, mild current, good visibility, and active reef life. Lobsters are large this year and promise a great harvest beginning Saturday.

Sharing is Caring: Shark Bites Snorkeling Teen Ascending with a Lobster

FLORIDA KEYS — A 13-year-old Florida boy catching lobsters with his family in the Florida Keys was bitten in the face by a nurse shark July 27, multiple outlets have reported.

Fischer Hricko, who had made the annual trek from Oviedo to the Keys with his family for lobster season, was in the water when the shark chomped down on his lip, according to WSVN.

“I saw a big one (lobster) and I got it in my hand,” he said. “On the way up, when I had the lobster in my hand, I felt a little tap on the back of my leg, and I looked behind me and the shark was in my face.”

The brave teen grabbed the shark to pull it from his face, WKMG reported.

“Then I just swam as fast as I could back to the boat, screaming,” he said.

DAILY BEACH DIVER REPORT: 08-03-2022

Mild surf invites us to venture in and swim over the murky shallows. Viz is good to very good, enough to see the many large lobsters plotting their strategy for the season starting Aug 6. Surge is considerable and water temp is 86F at 20’. Expect tea brown water and very poor visibility close to shore.
