Massive thunderstorms and violent lightning this past week claimed a historic victim when they took out the iconic lighthouse in Hillsboro Beach. For over 115 years, the Hillsboro Lighthouse has been a beacon for mariners off the coast of SE Florida but that light went out Thursday night when a direct lightning strike fried newly installed circuitry. Recently converted to LED from its old incandescent bulbs, the renewed light had been functioning well until nature decided to test it with an overload. Technicians have restored partial function to the light and a permanent repair will be possible once replacement parts arrive from the manufacturer in Australia.
