Blacklight Dive and Lobster Hunt in Hollywood

  • Charnow Park 300 Connecticut Street Hollywood, FL, 33019 United States (map)

Details

The reef as you've never seen it! We'll take our regular lights to find our way to the reef, but once there, we will switch to blacklight only. The lower frequency light produced by the special lamp causes the coral and many sea creatures to flouresce - meaning, they produce their own light. It is liking diving in a room full of blacklight posters glowing back at you.

Others may accompany to scoop a few lobsters traveling the reef at night. Lobsters have been sneaky this season, choosing to travel more at night and hide out deep in the reef nooks at night. We'll see if we can't catch a few out in the open.

Yellow Brick Road. You've heard about this incredible site, now you can visit it and enjoy its wonders just off the beach in Hollywood. Once a path through the reefs for an outfall pipe, this structure now serves as habitat for in incredible diversity of marine life, including reef fish, tropical species, shark, rays, lobster, and countless others. Larger fish traverse the area in their circuits north and south, so expect to see tarpon, amber jack, mackeral, and small tuna.

We'll meet in the parking garage, if you must rent gear, or in the ramada next to the Broadwalk out front. After a short briefing, we'll wade into the surf and swim the few meters past the surf to the first reef line. The Yellow Brick Road starts about there but because it is a narrow entry, we'll have some veteran divers lead the way. Bring a camera because you will doubtless see a lot to remember.

There is plenty of parking available in the garage. Meters take cash and cards.

RENTAL GEAR is available with sufficient notice (not later than 2hrs before event time). We can bring to the site BCD, tank, regulator, and weights, if you let us know what size and how much. Air tanks, $10; BCD’s, $15, regulator set, $15; and weights (any amt), $5. To ensure your gear order, please submit payment via Venmo (tom-carpenter-8), PayPal (tcarpenterjr@gmail.com), and CashApp ($beachdiver).
