Super moon phenomena occur when the moon reaches the part of its orbit when it is closest to the earth. Blue moons occur when two full moons take place within the same month. Like the blue moon, a "pink moon" — the moon that will be visible on April 29 — does not actually resemble the color for which it was named, According to the Farmer's Almanac, pink moons are named after the flowers that grow in the United States and Canada during the springtime. In some parts of the world this lunar phenomenon is also referred to as an egg moon or fish moon, due to the influx of shad fish that swim upstream during this time of year. Unfortunately, the moon does not resemble a fish or an egg, either (though how cool would that be?).
A full moon makes a night dive special by filling the sky with a golden glow that shimmers below like a silvery-blue sheen on the reef. The moon usually rises about the time we wade into the surf, so it provides a backdrop for what feels like an epic entry. High tide coincides with moonrise (read up on lunar theory and tide movement for further information), so visibility is a bit better that time of day unless other meteorological conditions, like high winds or storms, complicate.
We'll meet and gear up in the parking lot adjacent to and just south of the Dania Beach Grill. Divers MUST have a primary light and a backup light. We also recommend a tank marker or other personal illuminated marker (glowstick, etc.) Those needing a buddy may find one among the many other divers who will attend.
This dive ranges from 16 to 25 feet in depth. Anyone not night qualified may work with instructor Tom to ensure proper training. Freshwater showers are available. Parking meters take cash and cards at $1.75 per hour. Refreshments are available after diving at the Grille or at the Quarterdeck on the pier.
RENTAL GEAR IS AVAILABLE FOR THIS DIVE. Air tanks $10, BCD's $15, Regulator set $15, weights $5. Please have your request posted no later than two hours before the scheduled dive time to ensure we can load your gear before departure.
