Seas have been calm and beautiful lately, so we need to get in and spend some time with our reef. We'll gather in the parking lot adjacent to the Dania Beach Grill, gear up, and wade into the surf. Winds are forecast to remain good for this morning but to increase some later.
The Seatech Ledges constitute the west-facing wall of the first reef located about two pier-lengths from shore. On a calm day, it takes a 15-minute surface swim to reach the drop point. Depths range from about 25' on the sandy bottom west of the reef to 14' on top of the reef. Under best conditions, snorkelers sometime accompany the group and follow the flags enjoying the busy reef flora and fauna. This dive is good for those certified open water diver or more advanced but divers must be prepared for a swim. Bottom times are generally 45-60 minutes.
At the Ledges, you can expect to see everything from lobsters, hogfish, grouper, colorful tropicals, sea cucumbers, octopus, nurse sharks, moray eels, and rays. During lobster season, divers are allowed to harvest with the proper license and equipment. Spear hunting is also permitted.
